Bank of Sweden (Sveriges Riksbank) is the first and the oldest central bank in the world. It was established in 1668 as a national bank of the country and called Sveriges Rikes Standers Bank (Bank of Public Estates of Sweden).

The first foreign bank was founded in 1986, when foreign banks were allowed to open subsidiaries representation in Sweden. In the early 90's due to the financial crisis, their number decreased significantly, but later it was decided to allow open branches, which was the increase in the number of foreign banks (30 banks at the end of 2009). The main activity of the majority of foreign banks - is the corporate banking and deposit market. The largest foreign bank is Danske Bank.
